CHARLOTTE SMITH
Somewhere on the fringe …

Anya Tish Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of an exhibition Charlotte Smith: Somewhere on the fringe… marking this acclaimed abstract painter’s fourth solo exhibition with the gallery.

Smith's paintings are a celebration of the physical act of repetition. Her current work further pushes the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Layers upon layers of stacked droplets and blobs of paint take shape and protrude forth from each piece, slowly and subtly injecting themselves into space. In recent works the amassed droplets become "ropes" spouting directly from the wall. The emerging patterns, contrasting hues, and variety of textures are formed into unearthly, tactile environments; each with a life of its own. Though bordering on the uncanny, Smith's paintings have an unidentifiable familiarity about them, drawing the viewer in and captivating him somewhere on the fringe of reality.

Smith's work has traces of Frank Stella and Gerhard Richter in the way each painting is complete within itself, and not tattered shards of symbolism or ideology. With Smith's work, what you see is what you see. The work is independent, working in pure color, shape, and texture, unattached from identification with the objects and realities of the world.  Smith is process driven and has spent years painstakingly honing and perfecting her individual technique.

A native Texan, Smith resides in Dallas and received her Masters in Fine Arts from the University of North Texas in Denton. She has had solo museum shows in California and Texas, and her works are in the permanent collections of art institutions such as the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, Beaumont, and the Art Museum of South Texas, Corpus Christi, as well as in numerous corporate and private art collections.
